Medical Volunteers in Tanzania

Medical Volunteers in Tanzania

Medical Volunteers in Tanzania

Become one of the medical volunteers in  Tanzania, help to treat people and create health awareness at the dispensary.

In 2002 the Servants of the Poor, Daughters of Charity opened the dispensary. Primarily their mission was to attend to basic healthcare needs and education of their local communities. Within this culture, cattle is their way of life and the main source of income, when necessary. Education and healthcare was perceived as less valuable, as people resorted to traditional healing methods.

Medical assistance for the poor

When the facility began in January 2002, people did not see their assistance as necessary, as they had already become accustomed to their own methods of care. Only when these showed negative results did people begin to use the dispensaries facilities.

Why get involved?

The dispensary is seriously understaffed with only one clinician employed; they have several assistants however help is always required and appreciated.

Examining babies with ultrasound

The laboratory has a range of equipment such as an ultrasound machine, and the ability to screen for malaria and test for many other life-threatening illnesses. Within the facility they also have the ability to treat many of these diseases, such as pneumonia, malaria and sexually transmitted infections. Revealing the fantastic work the project does in allowing people access to tests and treatment they previously did not know possible. As a volunteer you would be apart of a lifesaving team, to those truly in need.

Medical Volunteers in Uganda on AIDS Prevention

HenceYouCheck out the HIV/AIDS prevention program in for medical volunteers in Uganda. Since the country has been greatly affected by the AIDS epidemic, Uganda is home to more than 1 million AIDS orphans. Therefore, you will provide much-needed services through HIV/AIDS education and awareness, counseling and training, testing, and other duties. To apply, you must be a medical student, EMT or paramedic, or a nurse or physician. This program starts from $250 for your first week in Uganda.

Medical Volunteers in Uganda helping people affected by AIDS

Volunteer in Uganda in our health awareness projects. Uganda is at the heart of the sub-Saharan HIV/AIDS pandemic. Hence, an estimated 25.4 million people are living with HIV and approximately 3.1 million new infections occurred in 2004. In 2004, an estimated 2.3 million people lost their lives to the disease. Widowed mothers and elderly widowed grandmothers are the predominant heads of households.

AIDS is threatening the healph of the people in Uganda

HIV/AIDS results in a progressive depletion of the immune system leading to immune deficiency. This is why the weakened immune system is vulnerable to secondary diseases. However, access to medical care is non-existent for many Ugandans where almost half the population lives in absolute poverty.

Educate to prevent AIDS/HIV

Since most rural areas are severely lacking in services and HIV/AIDS awareness, nearly every family has had someone who is sick or has died from AIDS. Hence education continues as a primary weapon in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Therefore, awareness programs are provided at the community level, to schools and institutions, and at the personal level with individual counselling and home visits. Music and dramas by people living with HIV/AIDS can greatly contribute to educate local people. Also educational films help to enhance the awareness.

HIV/AIDS Counselling Training

You may choose to participate in one or more of the folowwing areas: HIV /AIDS Education and Awareness; HIV/AIDS Counselling Training (TOT); Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT). Please note: volunteers need to have a certification or proof of experience in a medical field, such as a medical student ID, EMT or paramedic certification, or nursing or physician’s credentials to participate in this Project.

Biodiversity and Environmental Protection Program in Uganda

Volunteer in Uganda and help to save and protect the biodiversity of the environment. Uganda depends heavily on environment and natural resources. However, the country suffers from environmental problems that put the economic, environmental and social development at risk. IKPVA’s biodiversity and environmental protection program offer participants with both valuable life-changing experience and an opportunity to make a difference.

Participants in the Volunteer in Uganda program do hands-on work and have a direct impact on the preservation of the environment in the host communities. Volunteers may help to integrate environmental curriculum in schools; promote sustainable utilization of natural resources— proper sanitation practices and alternative energy practices; promote environmental awareness activities— wastewater management, recycling, environmental youth clubs and park management; as well as promoting environmental approaches— sustainable agriculture, fuel efficient stoves and various agri-business strategies.

International Participants in the volunteer program

The program provides international participants with the opportunity to gain first-hand experience in agro-forestry, tree planting and reforestation, with focus on the Western Uganda Highlands. The program brings together international volunteers on a regular basis to construct nurseries both with schools and communities, transplanting trees to degraded forest sites and train communities on agro-forestry techniques. Some of the activities depend on the current season. Please note, participants in our volunteer in Uganda environment program do not need to be a qualified or experienced to participate on these projects, however volunteers with special expertise are highly preferred.

On weekends, the soccer team will play matches, where you will assist the coach. Volunteers do not need to be professionals in sports, but rather have a passion and excitement for this sports program. Though you will work on the weekends, you can arrange with our staff to take off certain weekends for travel if you want to see other parts of the country. Volunteers in the sports program are most successful if they combine it with another program, such as childcare or teaching, to fill their days with more activities and build stronger bonds with the community.

Give Love and Joy to Children of Ghana

Ghana Childcare Program

Volunteers with children in Ghana

Childcare volunteers are beneficial supports to the children’s home staff, who often have their hands full with large numbers of youth being cared for in the children’s home. Therefore, volunteers are able to provide a better staff to child ratio. Volunteers who are most successful come with an energetic spirit and can play games or engage in creative fun or educational activities with the youth at the home. Moreover, their support in one on one tutoring opportunities with youth at the children’s home is a valuable way to support educational empowerment, since many of the students do not get individualized tutoring attention. It is very common for volunteers to combine programs, and do both childcare and teaching during their service to make the most of their time, as the youth at the children’s home are in school during the day!
