Lorenz enjoys his time as a Reforestation Volunteer in Rio and teaching English

Lorenz Reforestation Volunteer at the Tijuca Rain Forest in Rio

Lorenz had a wonderful time in Rio de Janeiro with the Reforestation volunteer project at the Tijuca Rain Forest and teaching English, erverything was organized so well.

I spent four wonderful weeks volunteering with Iko Poran in Rio de Janeiro. Everything was organized very well and smoothly, from the airport pick-up and accommodation arrangement to the induction tour and individual projects. Despite initial safety concerns about living and working in Rio, the organizer of my trip, Felipe, ensured safety throughout my trip. The free private Portuguese lessons were another great feature of this program, and it helped me settle into the local daily life very quickly. What I appreciated most of the organization was Felipe’s effort and flexibility to tailor the projects towards my interests. This allowed me to work on significantly impactful projects, but it also made my experience truly enjoyable and unforgettable.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?

I would recommend everyone to try to learn a bit of Portuguese before coming to Rio. This can make a vast difference when communicating with locals who you may interact with during the projects and in everyday life. – Lorenz Reinemer (20 years)

How can I work as a Reforestation Volunteer in Brazil?

You can volunteer with the reforestation project at The Tijuca National Forest in Rio de Janeiro, the world’s largest urban forest. While you are volunteering on this project, you will be helping in the tree nursery. But there is more, what you can do:

  • counting species of tropical trees and typical plants
  • opening and cleaning hiking trails in the forest
  • cutting branches,
  • painting fences / signals,

among other activities.
