English teacher in a Buddhist Monastery and more Adventures

When Elpidio from USA first learned about Iko Poran during a stay in South America, he signed up to volunteer as English teacher in a Buddhist Monastery in Kathmandu. But the uplifting experience with the young monks was just the beginning of more exciting travel adventures and volunteer experiences!

I was in South America December 2017 when I learned about Iko Poran. At first, I wanted to volunteer near where I was, considering that Iko Poran was Brazil-based. However, circumstances needed me to be in the Philippines in February. Fortunately, Iko Poran also had volunteering opportunities in Asia and after considering my options, I decided to volunteer as English teacher in a Buddhist monastery in Kathmandu. I registered for two weeks but ended up extending it to three weeks – March 17 to April 9, 2018. The experience was uplifting. It was my first time to work with children and it gave me optimism that the world continues to be more interconnected. While teaching, I met co-volunteers who opened my eyes to many more adventures which led me to visit Auroville, India and Bangkok, Thailand before resuming my original plan to immerse myself in Spanish-speaking countries. Now I am in Sevilla, Spain and I am looking forward to a next volunteering opportunity. I am confident working with Iko Poran will yield another outstanding outcome. – Elpidio (63), United States

Teaching English to the child/junior monks at the Monastery has been an interesting, inspiring and educational experience for me. I only hope my pupils experienced it the same way. The atmosphere in the monastery was very welcoming, peaceful and enjoyable and so were the people in it. – Lammert Lettinga

Teaching English in a monastery in Kathmandu: an experience to remember!

Teaching English to the child/junior monks at the Monastery has been an interesting, inspiring and educational experience for me. I only hope my pupils experienced it the same way. The atmosphere in the monastery was very welcoming, peaceful and enjoyable and so were the people in it. At times, it was challenging to keep the kids in line by using only positive feedback and enthusiasm (because they see and undergo enough violence in their lives) but I think me and other volunteers have found a nice balance to make lessons entertaining, engaging as well as educational. It has been very rewarding to see how much progress they’ve made in the three weeks I got to teach them.

How can this program be improved?

By insuring that when volunteers are finished with the program, it is well-documented what progress they made and at what level the kids are at in their English proficiency. It took me quite some time to figure out what kind of lessons would be at the right level for the kids. – Lammert Lettinga

Medical Volunteer in Nepal: Internship at the Pediatric Clinic in Kathmandu

When Magda from Portugal started her workaway with IKPVA as medical volunteer in Nepal, an old childhood dream came true for her. At the Pediatric Hospital in Kathmandu she exchanged experiences and knowledge, while her Nepalese host family welcomed her with utmost kindness. During the last days of her trip, Magda went for trekking in the Annapurna Region.

It´s been a childhood dream of mine to visit Nepal and the neighboring region of Tibet.
Ikoporan in association with FDIP allowed me to join the wishes of helping others and getting to know such a different culture as the Nepalese is from the European.

In the Heart of Kathmandu

During my 3 week stay in Nepal I was very fortunate to be welcomed in a host nepalese family that not only demonstrated utmost kindness and generosity to me and my boyfriend, but also with whom I was able to learn about many customs and their meanings, cultural inheritance, frustrations and dreams in the heart of Kathmandu. I thank them for having enriched my experience in countless ways.

Volunteering in a Kathmandu Hospital – a great opportunity!

At the hospital I was able to exchange experiences and knowledge that was beneficial to both sides and was also extremely well integrated in the hospital routines. Thank You Manmohan Cardiothoracic Vascular and Transplant Center for this opportunity!!!

During the final days: Trekking in the Annapurna region, Nepal

Annapurna region - Nepal

Annapurna region – Nepal

The final days in Nepal I spent trekking in the Annapurna region and was blessed with the most breathtaking mountain landscapes I have ever seen!

All of these things were perfectly orchestrated with the help of Ikoporan and FDIP, and I will always be extremely grateful for that!!! Keep up the excellent work!!!!!

Nepal Volunteer with Orphanage

Joe Bartley, from UK, and Vivian (Minghui Ma), from China, painting the playground of the orphanage in Nepal.

I can’t thank the organization enough for the experience they gave me. In my three month programme there has not been a day where I didn’t feel part of a family and looked after as if I as grown up with them. They was always prepared to help me with any problems or queries.

They have cooked food every night tasted incredible and the family very quickly made me feel at home and looked after. This is a feeling I will never forget. Working every day at the orphanage was amazing. The children made sure they would keep me on my toes and keep me fit. They are such wonderful kids and even though I was there to help and teach them. What I received back in return is more than I could ever imagined. I was their older brother and that’s something I’m very proud to be able to say. The staff also did everything they could to make me feel welcome and I never once felt alone or out of place due to the hospitability they showed me. The past three months have been the most wonderful time of my life and I owe all the family, the children and Narayan and his organization. Words won’t do justice to how much it has changed me for the good. Thank you once again for everything. – Joe Bartley

Volunteering on Childcare at an Orphanage in Nepal

Nepal has long suffered from insurgency and conflict. Therfore, many children have been left homeless and orphaned. Working in the childcare project you will have the opportunity to make a humble difference in the lives of these children. You will be helping them day-to-day by creating learning, recreational and extracurricular activities such as drawing, painting, singing, and dancing, and also by educating them on important issues like sanitation.

Showing Love and Affection to the children

The most important role you will have as a volunteer here is to make the children feel that they are with someone who truly cares about them. The idea is not to make a dramatic change or life-changing contribution to these kids, but is more that you share your love and affection with them and make them feel valued and special.

Simply by playing and having fun with them, being honest and present, you will have a really positive impact on their daily life. The key objective of this project is offering mental, intellectual, physical and social improvement to these deprived children.
