Volunteer with Elephants in Thailand – Surin

Volunteer with elephants in Thailand, Surin, and join the centuries old tradition of training ‘domestic’ elephants by mahouts in Thailand.

This volunteer project offers a responsible and sustainable alternative to the fate often faced by elephants in Thailand. Because of the dissolution of the logging industry, many elephants are taken to urban areas to beg for money and are often mistreated.

Volunteer with Elephants in Surin and Support the Local Community

This Elephant Experience financially supports the local community and the wellbeing of the elephants. Whilst volunteering with the elephants, you will epxerience the local village life and culture. This gives you the opportunity to learn about rural Thai culture and to witness the incredible challenges that elephant communities and mahouts face in Thailand.  Spend your days close and in personal touch with these magnificent elephants.

Please note; so as to maintain best practice, we do not condone the riding of elephants by visitors or tourists, and thus it is not allowed. The bond between the mahout and elephant is very special and culturally complex thus should be respected.

Meals:

Meals are included whilst at the village – please budget around $10-15 USD per day when you’re not at the village.

Arrival airport: Bangkok international airport, Suvarnabhumi – BKK.

About Volunteering with Elephants in Thailand

Join the centuries old tradition of training ‘domestic’ elephants by mahouts in Thailand.

The volunteer program aims to offer a responsible and sustainable alternative to the fate often faced by elephants in Thailand. Because of the dissolution of the logging industry, many elephants are taken to urban areas to beg for money and are often mistreated. Therefore, our elephant volunteer program continues to lead the way in Surin in helping to change attitudes towards elephant care for the better.

Since all the activities are about caring for the elephants and treating them with respect, we put our strict no riding policy. Therefore, your work schedule will include walking them to the river to bathe them, harvesting and planting food, feeding the elephants, everything is based around a new approach to elephant care that puts the elephant first.

A New Approach on Elephant Care

The program will bring you in touch with the elephants. Therefore, the close and personal contact with these magnificent creatures on a daily basis will be an unforgettable beautiful experience. At the same time you will see the real Thailand, the daily life of its residents. Living in a traditional long house with other volunteers, that’s rural Thai life at it’s very best!

Volunteer Teaching English in Thailand

Volunteer teaching English in Thailand, at Surin in a rural Thai school. With the support of a bilingual coordinator you will plan and teach English classes to children aged 5-16, though the majority of your time will be spent working in primary schools with students aged 5-12.

English is an Important Subject at Thai Schools

Teaching English in Surin

Forming part of the core curriculum, English is an important subject in Thai schools and can allow access to a wide range of further opportunities. Students who advance well with their English language skills are at a great advantage when moving on to higher education or finding employment.

Native Speakers Teaching English in Thailand

In recent years the emphasis has changed in relation to teaching English within the Thai School System, moving away from an often unfeasible focus on advanced grammar towards the incorporation of native English speakers into classes and a focus on communication.

Volunteers Teach English as Native Speaker in Rural Schools

Many rural schools do not have sufficient funding to employ a full-time native English speaker. That’s where you as a volunteer will fill in the gap and give the children the opportunity to learn from a native speaker. The aim of your stay will be improving the communication skills of the children and encouraging a fun learning environment in the language classes.

You will be expected to plan your own lessons upon a range of topics provided, you will be given plenty of preparation time and will have advice and lesson materials available to help you. In exchange for this amazing work you will have the opportunity to learn about rural Thai culture and experience an amazing and unique side to this fascinating country.

Budget for Meals and Local Trips

Please budget US$ 10-15 per day for simple meals whilst in Surin and more for socializing / trips away.

Arrival airport: Bangkok international airport, Suvarnabhumi – BKK.
