Emmanuel volunteered on Health Coaching for Children in Ethiopia

Emmanuel enjoyed working on Health Coaching for children and youth in Ethiopa and included first aid techniques as well. Great Job!

I had a great experience volunteering and working with children of the Ethiopian Education Foundation (EEF). It was a grand experience coaching the youths on the basics of health and wellbeing lifestyle initiatives. Everyone involved learnt and practiced basic CPR and resuscitation techniques to save lives in emergency situations where there is no doctor.

The students learned how to handle and respond to various forms of first aid treatments for common accidents. It was also a pleasant experience as various groups explored how to recognize and manage signs of worms, diarrhoea and dehydration in children.

The youths loved it as much as I did as they also helped in showing me around the local places of relaxation at the weekends. Would relish an opportunity to work with the staff and organising team again as they made my experience a fantastic one.

I would recommend Iko Poran and EEF to anyone who would like to consider volunteering in Ethiopia. – Emmanuel

Albane volunteered with Down Syndrome Children in Peru

I spent 6 weeks on Cusco, in Perou, as a volunteer in a college with down syndrome children. All they were aged between 15 and 17 years old.
The experience was very special, challenging, and so interesting and valuable.

At the beginning, it deals more to obtain credibility and confidence from students, who can be distant when they dont know you.

After, it deals with managing the special needs of each of them, at the same time. I have a 10 children class, and all of them had very different level of handicap. It was so constructive and passioning to do that !!! Adapt to each children to make it improve and feel good.

They were very happy and artistic children, always speaking, or laughing, playing, or for some others singing and dancing. I laughed so much with them.

And meeting familles, mums of my students, I really met amazing persons!

I was living with a family in Cusco, which allowed me to become bilingual, speaking Spanish all time. You need to speak some Spanish at least in this kind of volunteering, its as useful in the family as well as at work.

My family was so lovely, always helping and advising me about my trips, and telling me stories. You will eat all the Amazing Peruvian dishes like cevicheeee !

I shared a lot with them, I definitely had the feeling to have a second family. Its a way to be perfectly immerged in the peruvian culture, it’s the best one!!!!

Thank you very much for all the persons I met which fully marked my volunteering. – Albane, France

About the Teaching Internship at the Primary School in Cape Town

This is a government primary school which is open to the kids in the area who generally don’t have much money. The school is so important because there are still high levels of illiteracy. Even though funds are short, the staff at this school work hard to provide quality education for these children. So children will be able to develop their full potential. After school, they will have better job opportunities.

The teachers at school strive to foster initiative, individuality, and integrity and provide the children with the learning to be able to tackle life head-on. They teach them the power of positivity, perseverance, and ambition. Within their limited means, the kids are given a chance to have a promising future and stop the circle of poverty.
Your creativity and input are very much welcomed at the school if you have any suggestions to help improve learning in the classroom please tell the local team.

Since the school is catering to children from an economically weak & marginalized area, quality English teaching with all other required amenities provided are a great advance for the young students. Our in country partners have supported the school with all the furniture, infrastructure & teaching materials like boards etc. There are around 54 students who are studying in 1st to 5th grades. As a volunteer you will teach the students the necessary things that will help them in developing their interpersonal skills. You will also help the local staff in daily operations of the school. Wonderfull Experience at the Children Hospital in Kathmandu! Rita from Portugal

Rita from Portugal spent six weeks as a medical volunteer at the Children Hospital in Kathmandu. She enjoyed living with a Nepales family, and soon overcame the language barrier. At the hospital, she learned about the practises of treatment, and found her way to help the children:

It was a wonderfull experience this 6 weeks in Kathmandu, a unic experience that I will never forget. I had an opportunitiy to learn first hand about Nepalese family life and to share everything with them, like it was my own family. Be a volunteer in Konti Children Hospital it was a rewarding experience. However in the beginning I felt little frustrated. Because of the language barrier, the diferent practices from what I used too, I felt that I didn’t help as much I desire.

But then I take the opportunity to observe, discover, learn about the health cares, most common diseases in Nepal and listen all the experience and dificulties of the parent’s and all the staff of the hospital.

I start to be able to help slowly according to my capabilities.

After this experience I felt lik the Nepali people did more for me than I did for them.  – Rita Gomes da Silva (Portugal)
