Rita from Portugal spent six weeks as a medical volunteer at the Children Hospital in Kathmandu. She enjoyed living with a Nepales family, and soon overcame the language barrier. At the hospital, she learned about the practises of treatment, and found her way to help the children:
It was a wonderfull experience this 6 weeks in Kathmandu, a unic experience that I will never forget. I had an opportunitiy to learn first hand about Nepalese family life and to share everything with them, like it was my own family. Be a volunteer in Konti Children Hospital it was a rewarding experience. However in the beginning I felt little frustrated. Because of the language barrier, the diferent practices from what I used too, I felt that I didn’t help as much I desire.
But then I take the opportunity to observe, discover, learn about the health cares, most common diseases in Nepal and listen all the experience and dificulties of the parent’s and all the staff of the hospital.
I start to be able to help slowly according to my capabilities.
After this experience I felt lik the Nepali people did more for me than I did for them. – Rita Gomes da Silva (Portugal)

In the Artisan Shop of Renée and Mariana you can work as a volunteer in the arts and crafts, and thereby develop your artistic skills. Working in the shop, you can learn the techniques of Ecuadorian arts and crafts and create your own jewelry!
Together with the group “Taller” Mariana and Renée have opened the craft shop to create a new source of income for the village population. The Taller group began work ten years ago and acted as a catalyst in the community. In doing so, Mariana and Renée also adopt an ecological approach: they create the handicrafts of seeds and materials, which they sustainably grow and harvest in the cloud forest. As a volunteer, you will not only learn how to make modern and traditional jewelry from natural materials, you will also get insights and culture.
The artistic production is closely linked to the history of the indigenous Yumbo people and the initiative for reforestation in the educadorian cloud forest.
So, with your volunteer work in the craft shop, you will not only help generate income for the villagers, but you will also be actively involved in environmental change in the rainforest region of Ecuador. A truly sustainable volunteer project that will also familiarize you with the culture and the Spanish language.

Volunteer in Tanzania in our medical project and help to treat people and create health awareness.
In 2002 the Servants of the Poor, Daughters of Charity opened the dispensary. Primarily their mission was to attend to basic healthcare needs and education of their local communities. Within this culture, cattle is their way of life and the main source of income, when necessary. Education and healthcare was perceived as less valuable, as people resorted to traditional healing methods.
When the facility began in January 2002, people did not see their assistance as necessary, as they had already become accustomed to their own methods of care. Only when these showed negative results did people begin to use the dispensaries facilities.

The local school is also open for you to teach English and help with other educational subjects. Most of all, it is extremely important to give them attention and affection while teaching English as this is what they need the most. Volunteer teaching English in Uganda for young students at school. Since education in Uganda is considered a privilege, the young boys and girls will greatly benefit from you teaching native English to them. Though tuition is free (for up to four children and all orphans), families are sometimes unable to afford other fees or expenses, such as for equipment and books. While quality education for both boys and girls is crucial in reducing poverty and promoting gender equality, many schools in rural areas are struggling with overcrowded classes, shortage of skilled teachers, shortage of resources such as text books and support materials. Hence illiteracy rates among children of poorest families and communities are increasing and unemployment later in life can be a consequence.
Teaching is an immense privilege, inspiring young minds and seeing them grow can be one of the most exciting things a person can ever do and IKPVA –Uganda has a great range of volunteering projects where you can develop your experience and use your skills to help children in Uganda.
Volunteers in this field work alongside local teachers or on their own; at preschool, they teach basic English skills, and carry out basic childcare duties; at primary and secondary, they teach core subjects, such as English, mathematics, science, and can initiate extra-curricular activities after school such as art, music, theatre, sports or gardening; they may also carryout small and manageable community groups or individual tutoring outside class for adults. Participants in our Volunteer in Uganda programs should not count on teaching resources being available and many classes may have large numbers but it is a challenge that is highly rewarding. Please note, volunteers do not need to be a qualified or experienced teacher to participate on the Teaching project.
