Football coaching is great opportunity for volunteers to motivate young boys (and sometimes, girls). As a volunteer, you will help them creating team spirit, developing discipline and creativity. A basic quality of football is its simplicity: in many coutries in the world you can see children kicking the ball. Therefore, the project can easily be implemented in many countries: Argentina, Brazil, Uganda, Tanzania and more.
In Brazil, for some children from a favela a dream becam true, when they finally made part of the national team. It is the dream of social mobility, that boys born in a Rio favela once can compete on a world cup. On the football field, erverybody has equal chances to win.
My favourite memories are the smiles on people’s faces when I bought football equipment and stationary with money raised by friends and work colleagues. I was able to raise £530 in two weeks and would highly recommend raising some money through a donation website, so you can go the extra mile with supporting the locals. – Afonso, Kingsto University, London

Volunteer in Uganda in our football coaching. Sports have the powerful ability to draw people together, even beyond international borders, help to build strong communities, and contribute to the creation of healthier, happier individuals. Sports also can offer a route out of poverty and a path of excitement and promise to many young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.
However, for children in deprived communities, opportunities to participate in creative games are rare, due to lack of resources to provide specialized sports and physical education teachers. As a sports development volunteer, you can give these disadvantaged teenagers the chance to discover new sports and enjoy getting fit, encouraging them to uncover their potential. IKPVA Uganda’s sports coaching projects offer participants with both valuable life-changing experience and an opportunity to make a difference.
Volunteers on sports development in Uganda interact daily with local students, children, young adults, and their leaders in schools, sports clubs and youth organizations. They design and organize various sports activities like:
Please note: volunteers do not need to be qualified or experienced to participate on these projects, however volunteers with special expertise are highly preferred.

The sports program helps youth in the rural villages to foster their talents and focus on safe and healthy activities after school. Additionally, it helps youth to gain leadership skills and discipline by becoming a part of a team, and building stronger bonds with their community. As a sports volunteer, you’ll work alongside the coaches of the soccer team to help facilitate daily practices. On the weekends, when the soccer team plays matches, you will assist the coach. Volunteers do not need to be professionals in sports, but rather feel passion and excitement for this program. Though you will work on the weekends, you can arrange with our staff to take off certain weekends for travel if you want to see other parts of the country. Volunteers in the sports program are most successful if they combine it with another volunteer program, such as childcare or teaching, to fill their days with more activities and build stronger bonds with the community.

I was very happy with my time on the Sports Development Programme. My expectations of Rio were surpassed and I had an amazing time seeing the city, meeting people and doing my volunteer work. The coordinator, Felipe, was very helpful and it was a pleasure to stay with him and his family. The local people who helped with the programmes were really kind, patient and fun to work with.
I would advise future participants to try and learn as much Portuguese as possible before coming to Rio to give you a head start on being able to communicate with the locals. Don’t assume that they may speak some English, because many of the locals don’t and it will go a long way to show you have made the effort to learn their language. However, you will have lessons from a great teacher who is really patient and friendly. She will help you a lot with whatever level of Portuguese you are currently at and help you improve quickly. I learned a lot from her and really grateful for her time.
The best time to go to Rio to do volunteer work is during carnival. You will have to pay a little bit more, but it is defiantly worth it! The Blocos, parade and weather is amazing! You will have a great time partying and seeing the parade, while helping out with whatever project you choose to do.

After retuning to London, I now take regular Portuguese classes and use online website to learn as much as possible for when I return – you will want to return… believe me!!!
